How to Work on a 4-H Project

Every 4-H Member should work on and complete at least one project during the 4-H year. Mailbox members work on their projects at home with the help of their parents, other relatives, neighbors, or friends. It is very important that all 4-H’ers, especially mailbox members, read the 4-H Newsletter as soon as it comes in the mail. The newsletter contains very important information about a lot of different events and activities.

The 4-H enrollment form instructs members to sign up for up to five projects. One or two projects may be plenty for most 4-H’ers.

1. Adults and members need to become familiar with project books and activities to be completed.
2. Members do the activities under the supervision of adults.
3. Members write down what they do on the record sheet in the back of the project book or on the calendar.
4. Workshops-some countywide workshops are conducted for members working on projects related to the topic. These will be advertised in the 4-H Newsletter.
5. Field Trips and Tours – Members should go on at least one field trip or tour. These may involve one member and parents or may be a group. The trip can be anything related to the project.
6. Members need to share their project with others. This may be through teaching others the skills learned, sharing the finished product with others, giving a project report or demonstration at a competition, etc.
7. Members should exhibit a finished product at the fair or other events advertised in the 4-H newsletter.
8. Pictures – parents need to take pictures of the member working on the project. Pictures should show the process, not just the finished product.
9. Story – member should write a story about his/her experiences while working on the project.
